Sailing is often thought of as a luxurious activity, only enjoyed by the wealthy. You might be surprised, but that assumption is completely false.
The easiest way to choose a boat for a budget-friendly sailing vacation would be reserving a “bareboat” charter. This type of reservation is the most affordable and accounts for just the cost of the boat rental on a per-day basis. We recommend your sailing vacation should last at least 5 days and not exceeding 10 days to stay within a healthy budget.
Since you’re renting just the boat, it’s likely that you’ll need a skipper (AKA captain) to do all the sailing for you. This is an additional cost to the boat rental. However, having the expertise and local know-how of an onboard skipper can be INVALUABLE. Alternatively, if you already have someone in your group with previous sailing experience, then sailing yourself can be a great way to stretch your savings even further.
The boat rental is called “BARE-boat” for a reason. No crew or provisions are included as part of the rental agreement; instead, the sailing group is responsible for taking care of such things. Since you’re renting just the bareboat (and possibly hiring a skipper), you’ll also need to consider buying some groceries to stock the boat’s kitchen. Alternatively you can order groceries online in advance and have them delivered directly to the boat during your arrival.
If you’re traveling with kids or looking for some extra action, perhaps renting water toys to keep on the boat is something you want. Water toys typically include: floating mats, stand-up paddle boards or snorkel / scuba gear. Since bareboat rentals don’t include this, you’d need to reserve water toys yourself. Oftentimes, some toys CAN be reserved during the same time as the boat rental. Other times these toys can be rented from a local supplier. Either way, we will be here to help
What factor determines the price of a boat?
This is usually related directly to your group size and is easily summarized by the number of cabins (rooms) onboard. You can start by considering that in one cabin, the bed will comfortably sleep 2 adults. Depending on your group size, you’ll likely need between 3-6 cabins. With this in mind, you’ll likely be looking for a boat between 40-50 feet in length.
One of the best ways to plan for a budget-friendly sailing vacation is to sail with a GROUP OF FRIENDS or COUPLES. This is extremely effective because you can split or divide the overall cost of the vacation with each couple. By sailing with friends, you can exponentially reduce the overall costs that each family or couple would need to pay for the boat. However, if you plan to sail with just your family, partner or kids and assume 100% of the cost, there can still be many affordable options based on your total budget.
In order to ensure that you have a good experience renting a boat, it is important to consider the year that boat was built. Renting a brand new boat that is less than 1 year old might push the limits of your overall budget. However renting a cheap boat that is well over 7+ years old might bring unexpected issues due to wear & tear over the years. In this case, to stick to a budget-friendly sailing vacation, we recommend to rent a boat that is between 5-2 years old.
